KidsCan Re-imagined
Food Programme
Designing a re-imagined Food Programme to ensure kiwi kids affected by poverty are provided with the essentials they need to better participate in learning for a better future.
In 2021, DNA and the KidsCan team began working together to better understand a school’s needs, the needs of their students and the challenges they face, to deliver a re-imagined Food Programme to ensure kiwi kids affected by poverty are provided with the essentials they need to better participate in learning for a better future.
The introduction of a free government lunch programme, which covered 80% of KidsCan’s existing partnership schools, presented KidsCan with an opportunity to review and enhance the existing food programme to ensure no students are faced with food insecurity across the 800+ schools KidsCans supports.

This included looking at:

-
Redefining the role of KidsCan in addressing food insecurity in schools.
-
Assessing range and quantity of food items offered by KidsCan.
-
How might the programme be implemented in KidsCan partnership schools.
-
What changes are required to internal KidsCan processes, including the food ordering portal.

To help understand the baseline customer experience and deliver a transformed and re-imagined Food Programme, DNA focussed on critical customer journeys, through immersions with KidsCan staff and a series of interviews with schools and Subject Matter Experts to better understand their needs for food for kids.

Three opportunity areas emerged:
-
How might we ensure schools feel comfortable ordering what they need and ensuring it is available?
-
How might we create a better delivery experience for our schools?
-
How might we be the experts in nutrition and food ordering so teachers don’t have to be?

A digital prototype of a food ordering portal was tested and validated with schools and a re-imagined food programme was launched to enable a better future for all kiwi kids.
